Similarities Between The Tell Tale Heart And The Black Cat
Edgar Allan Poe was a man who wrote poems and short stories of mystery and macabre from the ages 18 to 40, where he then died of unknown reasons. Poeââ¬â¢s writing had a consistent theme throughout them at a certain point. That theme was that he couldnââ¬â¢t get over his wifeââ¬â¢s death; she had died of tuberculosis. Two of these stories were titled ââ¬Å"The Tell-Tale Heartâ⬠and ââ¬Å"The Black Cat.â⬠In ââ¬Å"The Tell-Tale Heart,â⬠a man kills another man because his eye made him feel weak and fragile. He hid the body in the floor only to be found out later because his own heart and mind were beating so hard he couldnââ¬â¢t take the guilt and admitted to the murder. Then, in ââ¬Å"The Black Cat,â⬠a man rips the eye out of his own cat then later hangs it. After that, heâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦In ââ¬Å"The Tell-Tale Heart,â⬠the narrator says that he could bear those hypocritical smiles no longer! I felt that I must scream or die! A nd now --again! --hark! louder! louder! louder! louder! â⬠¦ ââ¬Å"I admit the deed! --tear up the planks! here, here! --It is the beating of his hideous heartâ⬠â⬠(Poe 3)! Then in ââ¬Å"The Black Cat,â⬠the narrator says that it was ââ¬Å"No sooner had the reverberation of my blows sunk into silence, then I was answered by a voice from within the tomb! -by a cryâ⬠â⬠¦ ââ¬Å"a dozen stout arms were toiling at the wall. It fell bodily. The corpse, already greatly decayed and clotted with gore, stood erect before the eyes of the spectator.â⬠(Poe 5). So, in ââ¬Å"The Tell-Tale Heart,â⬠the narrator gets found out because there was a noise in his head in which wasnââ¬â¢t real, yet it still was a noise that caused him to admit to the murder and get caught. Yet, in ââ¬Å"The Black Cat,â⬠the narrator taps on the exact wall of where the body is with a cane, and a cry answers him while the police were investigated, thus his own noise caused him to be caught. A final comparison in both stories is that the narrator is driven insane by an eye. In ââ¬Å"The Tell-Tale Heart,â⬠the narrator explained that the old man had ââ¬Å"the eye of a vulture - a pale blue, eye, with a film over it. Whenever it fell upon me, my blood ran cold; and so by degrees --very gradually --I made up my mind to take the life of the old manâ⬠(Poe 1).
